YOUTH VOLUNTEERING FORUM MEETING -30th SEPTEMBER 2009 (Snibston Discovery Museum, Coalville).
NEW FORUM FOR YOUTH VOLUNTEERING
We would like to thank everyone who attended the first meeting of the 'Youth Volunteering Forum' (Leicestershire & Rutland) for anyone who may be working with young volunteers; those providing volunteering opportunities; people who might be youth volunteers themselves; or others who may be interested in developing or supporting youth volunteering within Leicestershire & Rutland.
The ‘Youth Volunteering Forum’ is being developed and facilitated by the Leicestershire and Rutland vinvolved team, part of v, the national youth volunteering charity, providing volunteering opportunities for 16-25 year olds, and working with groups & organisations to develop and promote youth volunteering.
Anyone who works with young people; involves them in volunteering opportunities; or wants to develop or support youth volunteering generally, are encouraged to get in touch, as it will provide a great opportunity to meet others with similar interests and involvements; keep up-to-date with latest developments; share ideas and good practice; promote opportunities; and also help to influence youth volunteering locally, hopefully through the possible revision and development of a local ‘Youth Volunteering Strategy’.
The first session (that had 71 people express an interest in attending, 61 people initially booking, and 50 people attending) was held at ‘Snibston Discovery Museum’ on Wednesday 30th September 2009.

COMMENTS RECEIVED
- “Very valuable – seeing and knowing who and what is out there”.
- “Enjoyed networking and working together in the small groups”.
- "Brilliant networking opportunity – new partnerships formed and meetings booked in diary from this event…Looking forward to next one”.
- “I don’t directly work with volunteering but found it interesting to meet other people from different organisations…Very good attendance from different organisations. Well done”.
- “Very useful in debating issues around a youth volunteering forum. Hopefully contributions made here will be used to develop the Forum. Interesting to see common themes, obviously main concerns of a large number of people….If a forum is created/developed, how will it link with the proposed ‘Volunteering Assembly’?...Structure/timing/membership/purpose are all important issues in ensuring such a Forum remain live/active/relevant to its members”.
- “Most people present were paid workers in this sector with lack of volunteers as I am. A lot of words – need actions. Organisation okay, but most of HR speak. Not action speak…Forum should: 1) Organise, co-ordinate and promote Youth Volunteering; 2) Provide a framework of suppliers of Volunteering Opportunities/Link in to ‘donors’ of volunteers – produce list and evaluate it; 3) Monitor success/efficiency of the process and provide feedback to members”
- “Wide range of agencies/projects. Good discussion on table”.
- “Well organised and structured…Liked working in small groups”.
- “Useful to meet with other organisations involved with Youth Volunteering and share concerns/issues”.
- “Useful to get a feel for wide range of people/organisations involved in volunteering for young people…Not confident that everyone will get what they need from future Forum…Can the PowerPoint be sent out to the attendees via email…Would have liked clearer explanation about link with VAL, etc”.
- "Well organised and met my expectations with regard to finding out more and networking”.
- “Very informative, good opportunity to network and find out more about youth volunteering…Enjoyed sharing thoughts and ideas”.
- “It was nice to meet face-to-face and see what other people that work with volunteers do…Networking and sharing knowledge was also very useful”.
- “It has filled me with a lot of ideas as for volunteer services and concerns and things that I lacked before…I think this kind of Forum should be encouraged and continue because it is something that will bridge the gap in our various communities”.
- “Quite thought-provoking in terms of youth volunteering. Good facilitation. Group work excellent and exercises thought-provoking…Hope that we do see a Forum at the end of this – balance strategy and operational delivery”.
- “Too diverse – hierarchy – everyone offering opinions when coming from a different background – own agendas…why does v want a Forum?”
- “Really enjoyable and informative. Great for idea sharing. Looking at good practice and networking…I would really like one that is for the City as I was slightly unsure whether this was for me or not”.
- “It’s a start but feels a bit tick-box for vinvolved…Needs to integrate to local Children and Young People Forum (held quarterly)”.
- “Good opportunity to meet with some volunteering organisations and to input into the youth volunteering arena…Why were ‘Connexions’ not here? A Key player in all sorts of interactions with young people”. (Note from organisers: Connexions were invited and a key worker was booked to attend but was unfortunately unable to at last minute due to work pressures, etc).
- “A mixed group…Felt it could have been more structured”.
- “Good for networking. Not boring, creative, focused. Good to have young people involved…Enjoyable. Hope the strategy gets implemented. Can you circulate ideas/outcomes, etc, via email and keep us updated”.
- “Was a good idea”.
- “Useful and relevant…Interesting to meet broad range of people, hopefully can maintain a broad range of interested members”.
- “Need more time for groups and organisations to stand up and speak, explain what they have to offer and give, what they do and what they need. This will further stimulate networking and joined up thinking”.
- “Gave us the opportunity to meet with others who have links into young people’s volunteering…Good contacts made for follow-up after the meeting to look at future development opportunities…Involvement in the future of this initiative is high on our agenda – we look forward to next stage”.
- “Enyoyed meeting others from similar backgrounds sharing ideas”.
- "A good starting point for sharing information to create a successful Forum and gain an understanding of others needs…It would be really beneficial to have more young people’s voice who can act as a representative to get their perspective”.
- “Good to share information and experiences and meet people from a variety of organisations…Difficult to manage but might have been better to have people moving around more”.
- “Enjoyed meeting people”.
- “Useful and informative”.
- “Networking and clearer understanding of volunteering”.
- “Very good networking opportunity and very informative”.
- "I enjoyed meeting lots of new people and talking to others about volunteering…It’s nice to hear from other organisations”.
- “Great to meet people from different jobs and sectors, etc”.
- “Informative to my role”.
- “Average – because it feels like college”.
- “Some useful information has been shared and has proved a great way to network”.
- “All the aspects above were met, plus there was a great atmosphere throughout the morning and was good to meet other people”.
